Keep Alexa Graph working with some Browser fixing-FireFox and Opera 9.10 |
In an effort to shut down Stataholics, the previous Alexaholics, Alexa has shut off their traffic graphs displayed on all websites except their own, and that’s why you see the blank bit on the left of the logo homepage.
If you still want to see the beautiful graphs on thelogohomepage or any other website, Ron Hornbaker has just written a great tip on how to counter the alexa action with firefox tweaking:
1. Make sure you’re using Firefox v2 (this may work with Firefox v1, but I haven’t tested)
2. Type “about:config” in the address (url) field, and hit Enter
3. Find the “network.http.sendRefererHeader” property by typing “refer” into the Filter: field
4. Double-click that property, and set its integer value to “0” in the prompt.
5. You’re done!
Doing the firefox tweaking will keep the referer header turned off and it will have some side effects, for example if you’re setting up some wordpress plugins, it wont work properly due to some security issues. if you dont want that to happen, you can alternatively install the Refcontrol firefox extension:
1. Once installed, right click where the chart should be
2. Select RefControl Options For Images’s site…
3. Click Custom and enter the value: alexa.com
4. Reload
Should work anywhere an alexa chart is displayed! To do the same thing in Opera 9.10:
1. Click on Tools -> Preferences in the menu
2. Click on the Advanced tab
3. Select the Network option
4. Uncheck “Enable referrer logging”
refresh the Statsaholic graph (Ctrl + F5) and it should be working
Final thought: I loved Alexa so much, not so much now after this happened…

If you are using Opera, I would recomend that you add a button for this purpose. Many sites wont work if refferer logging is disabled. Its cumbersone to go all the way into the Preferences to change the settings everytime.
Grab the button from http://operawiki.info/CustomButtons#quickprefs
that’s exactly right, pallab, as i pointed out in the post that there would be some side effects… and thanks for the link
